What Lip Filler Does

What lip filler does and what to expect.

Woman with Lip Filler

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body, to add volume, improve definition, and enhance lip shape. Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water, creating a soft, natural-feeling result that integrates with your own tissue rather than sitting on top of it. Results are immediate and adjustable. Hyaluronic acid filler can also be fully reversed with a dissolving enzyme if needed.

At PUUR every lip filler appointment begins with a conversation about your goals before any product is drawn up. Michael, our licensed Nurse Practitioner credentialed in dermal filler injections, takes the time to understand the look you are going for before he picks up a needle. He recommends how many syringes are appropriate, confirms the cost before starting, and never over-treats. Results last 6 to 12 months depending on metabolism and product used.

Goals & Pricing

What do you want to achieve?

Most patients come in with one of three goals. Your clinician will listen to what you are looking for and recommend the right amount of product to get you there, without over-treating.

🌸

Subtle Enhancement

0.5 to 1 syringe

You want your lips to look more defined and slightly fuller but still completely natural. Friends notice you look refreshed but cannot pinpoint why. This is the most common first-time goal.

💋

Noticeable Volume

1 to 1.5 syringes

You want a clear improvement in fullness that is visible but still proportionate to your face. You want people to notice you look good. The most popular goal for patients who have had filler before.

Correction & Definition

1 to 2 syringes

You want to address asymmetry, thin lip borders, a naturally flat cupid’s bow, or significant volume loss. Correction work requires more precise placement and occasionally more product. Your clinician will assess your anatomy and discuss realistic expectations.

⚠ Required Disclaimer

Lip filler is an injectable cosmetic procedure performed by a licensed clinician using hyaluronic acid dermal filler. Results vary by individual. Lip filler is not appropriate for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active cold sores or oral infections, or have certain autoimmune conditions. Swelling and bruising are normal after treatment and typically resolve within 3 to 7 days. All risks and aftercare instructions are reviewed at your appointment before treatment begins.

Your Appointment

Before, during, and after.

BEFORE

Before your visit

Avoid blood thinners including aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil for 24 to 48 hours before your appointment if possible to reduce bruising. Arrive with a clean face and no lip products. If you are prone to cold sores let us know when you book as a preventive antiviral may be recommended. Come ready to describe the look you are going for, photos from your phone are welcome.
DURING

During treatment

Your clinician applies a topical numbing cream before starting and gives it time to work before placing any product. The filler is then injected using a fine needle or cannula in precise locations based on your anatomy and goal. Most patients find the experience manageable with numbing in place. The treatment itself takes 15 to 20 minutes. Your full appointment is 30 to 45 minutes.

AFTER

After your visit

Swelling after lip filler is normal and expected, particularly in the first 24 to 48 hours. Your lips will look fuller than your final result during this time, do not judge the outcome until swelling has fully resolved (5 to 14 days). Avoid intense exercise, heat, and alcohol for 24 hours. Avoid kissing or putting pressure on the lips for 24 hours. Final results visible at 2 weeks. Results last 6 to 12 months.

Will my lips look natural?

That depends entirely on how much product is used and how it is placed. Overfilled or unnatural results come from too much product or poor technique. At PUUR the goal is always a result that enhances what you have. Your clinician will be direct with you about how many syringes are appropriate for your anatomy and your goal. If a patient requests more than what the clinician believes looks proportionate, that conversation happens before any product is placed.

Swelling is the most common thing that surprises first-time patients. Your lips will look significantly fuller immediately after treatment than your final healed result. This is completely normal. Most swelling resolves within 3 to 5 days with residual swelling fully gone by 2 weeks. Bruising is also possible, particularly if you are on blood thinners, and typically resolves within 5 to 7 days.

Most patients find their results last 6 to 12 months. The lips are a high-movement area of the face which means filler metabolizes faster here than in less active areas. Patients who stay hydrated, avoid smoking, and maintain a consistent treatment schedule tend to see results on the longer end of that range.

Does it hurt?

Topical numbing cream is applied before every appointment and given time to take effect before any injections begin. Most patients describe the sensation during treatment as manageable pressure rather than sharp pain. The lips are sensitive so some discomfort is normal but the numbing significantly reduces it. Cold compresses are applied immediately after to help with any residual tenderness.

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be fully dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This is one of the key advantages of hyaluronic acid over other filler types. If you are unhappy with your result or simply want to return to your natural lip after a period of time, dissolving is straightforward and results in a return to your baseline.

Yes. Many patients combine both treatments in a single visit. If you are interested in Botox alongside your lip filler, mention it when you book so your clinician can allocate appropriate time for both. The treatments are performed back to back with no issue.

Smooth Lines Too?

Interested in Botox?

Lip filler adds volume and definition. Botox addresses dynamic lines caused by facial muscle movement. Many patients treat both areas in the same visit for a more complete result. We offer Botox for forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet at PUUR.
